Metal rulers and steel squares are excellent straight edges for your utility knife to make straight cuts on your leather as well as for drawing patterns. Use tape measures for figuring waist sizes for belts and purse straps etc. Use rulers for marking exact locations of rivets, snaps and holes in your leather project. A leather marking pen works great on chrome tanned leather for making visible cut lines or for marking hole locations.  On chrome tanned leather,  the leather marking pen line marks are easily removable with a soft cloth or soft damp cloth. A wing divider is great for marking a parallel line along the edge of your leather belt or strap to follow for tooling.
